A Little More Each Day

One working mama learning to run & to maintain my 100+ pound weight loss!

My favorite mile ever

on May 6, 2014

If you’d asked me this weekend, I’d have said my favorite mile was either the first or last mile of the Princess Half Marathon. After last night, I emphatically have a new favorite mile – this one!

Is this the future of Run Disney?

Is this the future of Run Disney?

Last time I was out for a run, I used the Garmin to measure the distance from house to the end of the street and it turns out, round trip that distance is 1/4 mile. As I was considering signing Oliver up for the 400 meter kid’s run at a local running event Memorial Day weekend, I thought it would be a good idea to outline a safe place to practice with him.

When we got home from school last night, we changed into our running clothes (well, I did – O is wearing PJs for his run because it was pajama day at school). We headed out with a plan just to try to run part of the way down the sidewalk. He runs around like a normal kid, but this was the first time we’d ever intentionally gone for a run together. He said “ready set go” and off we went. Well, really he started going at “ready” and yelled “set go!” back at me from down the block.

About 2/3 of the way down the block, he stopped and asked me to carry him, which is what I expected our first time out. What I didn’t expect was for him to ask to be put back down a few seconds later so he could run the rest of the way home! We ended up covering our little quarter mile round trip four and  a half times. I walked him back the last trip back to the house. That means my little guy ran over a mile his first time out for a run! I’m proud and envious – those little two year old legs are strong 🙂

His joy in running was so inspiring and contagious. Even my husband, who doesn’t run, put on sneakers  and joined in. We had lots of laughs and I’m sure the neighbors had lots of laughs watching us.

Needless to say, I took the plunge and registered O for the 400 meter kid’s race. This was without a doubt the most fun I’ve ever had running a mile and I can’t wait to race with him in a few weeks!

Super duper congratulations to our friend Laura over at Project Lovely Laura! She was chosen for the Bad Ass Mother Runner Ragnar team for NapaValley. I am so excited for her and can’t wait to experience all of this virtually through her. Be sure to go over and congratulate her!

  1. Awww what a wonderful memory and great job to you and little Oliver!

    • We took a little video on the iPhone in case he grows up to be an Olympian or something. 🙂 Not likely with our genes, but you never know!

    • We had so much fun! He was red faced and short of breath but he just wanted to keep going. We could learn a lot from kids!

  5. Jessica, he is adorable! These pictures are priceless!! I think he is going to love the 400 meter race; you can tell in the pictures that the is having a blast! Thank you for the shout out and congrats! 🙂 I am still beaming and pinching myself that I get to run Napa with Dimity and Sarah (I need to play it cool and not get starstruck, they are rockstars to me!). 🙂

    • It’s making me look forward to running with him at the end of the day, for sure. 🙂 I may be doing lots of little short runs this month, but at least they’ll be lots of fun!
