Tuesdays on the Run: Random Running Thoughts

on March 17, 2015
Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
This week’s Tuesdays on the Run topic is race rituals and lucky charms and I honestly don’t have any. I did consider wearing my lucky earrings (beautiful pearl studs from a lovely friend of mine as a graduation gift from graduate school) for the Princess Half Marathon, but decided it wasn’t worth the risk of losing them. Thus, no racing lucky charm for me. I am looking forward to reading about everyone else’s rituals and lucky charms though! Instead, how about a random assortment of running thoughts?

– I really enjoyed my walk around campus yesterday (partly because I was dancing in my head to the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack) but confess that it is going to be really hard to walk in my neighborhood for today’s 3-5 miles. I’m used to running the hills and sidewalks of my neighborhood, not walking them, so it will be hard to hold myself back. I want this ankle to heal up, so I’ll do it, but old habits die hard and my habit is definitely to run in my neighborhood.

– Both my son’s babysitter and my secretary are running the same 5K I am this weekend. I’m still thinking about what I’m going to do because I have 9-10 miles to run that day, but I know I’ll be taking it very slow because of the seriously hilly course and my ankle. I’m really looking forward to having new-ish runners to cheer along. 🙂

– I’m taking O on our annual trip to Nana’s house next month and have a six mile run on the schedule the weekend we’ll be there. It’s the last taper long-ish run, so I want to try to do it on the day assigned. Looks like I’ll be making lots of loops their long driveway (about half a mile). At least it’ll be flat 🙂

– Today is open registration for the Wine & Dine Half Marathon. Check out this post about the highlights of the race course – I can’t wait! I confess part of my mind is skipping ahead to thinking about training (and fueling!) for a night race like this, with a 5K in the morning. I keep reminding myself that I’ve got many miles of races to get through before I get to that one and I need to keep my eye on the ball in Lincoln in May (just a little over 6 weeks away!!).

– While I have this temporary tweak in my ankle brought on by that hilly, all-terrain 10K, I have to say that my legs in general feel great this training cycle and I attribute that almost entirely to my strength training. I’ve been more regular about it with this training cycle than ever before and it shows, especially in the absence of that nagging pain in my left gluteus medius that’s been there since September! It’s so nice to run without that pain and the funky form I always ended up with at the end of runs, trying to baby that hip.

Good luck to everyone trying to get into Wine & Dine today! I’m looking forward to reading the Tuesday on the Run posts about race rituals. Be sure to check out the posts in the link up and thanks as always to April, Patty and Erika for hosting.

  1. The GOTG soundtrack is so awesome. I smile every time I hear a song pop up in my songlist from that soundtrack! Good luck getting into W&D!

    • I got to register for Wine & Dine early since we’re DVC members, so I’m already in thankfully. I’ll be curious to see how fast it sells out today! I confess that after listening to GOTG on my walk yesterday, we ended up re-watching the movie last night. 🙂

My husband is obsessed with the GOTG soundtrack too. Unfortunately, I fell asleep during the movie and need to rewatch it. I don’t have any lucky charms…in fact, when I first read the post I thought you were doing to discuss the cereal…oops!

  3. It is unbelievable how quickly the Disney races sell out! I am seriously wondering at what point Disney is going to go to a lottery registration system. Last year I forgot about registering for Wine and Dine until 24 hours after it opened, and at that point the race was already 98% sold out! Talk about being nervous! Same thing with Disneyland – the registration link wasn’t working at first for some, myself included, so I freaked out thinking that it was going to sell out while I was having technical issues!

    • I’m amazed at how fast it goes! I had no trouble getting in as DVC but I know there are lots of angry people out there today. I hate the lottery idea in some ways because at least I have a bit of control over it now, which is important since I have to schedule time off work and travel really far in advance with my job!

  4. Hopefully that ankle will settle down with a few days’ rest!

I need to get that soundtrack for sure! And not only did I get registered for Wine & Dine but I managed to prepurchase the race jacket too! Yay!

  6. No lucky charms for me but I did realize that I always wear my Runner necklace on race day!

    • I always wear earrings but hadn’t tried a necklace because I’ve been worried about the bouncing. You guys have featured some really cute jewelry on your site. I may need to add some of it to my birthday list for future lucky charms. 🙂

I love wine and dine! I did it in 2013 and it is one of my favorite races. I took a short nap in the afternoon and stayed off my feet. Then ate a “breakfast for dinner” with toast and PB like I typically would. And after the race I planted myself in “Germany” and drank beer and ate sausages and pretzels. So excited for you! And finding a fun costume is also imperative! I was a German beer girl 🙂

  8. Hmm, I need to check out that soundtrack. My music is awful these days – Air Supply came up the last time I put it my iPod on shuffle. Oy.
