May Goals

I can’t believe it is already May. Of course, being Nebraska, I had my fireplace on last night, but still I’m glad May is here. We’re having a rainy week, which is desperately needed after our very dry winter. All the rain is making me excited about my garden. I have little kale shoots coming up! So far, kale is the only thing we’ve planted because we’ve just gotten past our projected “last frost” time period. The start of gardening season is definitely a big thing I’m looking forward to this month!

My goals for May:

1) Finish the 100 mile challenge – currently halfway done, thanks to a 2 mile walk last night to hit the 50 mile marker by the end of April. Having a mileage target to hit for the month is definitely keeping me moving and I like the flexibility I get from it being a mileage target in general, not specifically a running target. I’m finding myself taking a lot more walks during my lunch break at work, which is great for my mental and physical health!

2) Run the BoysTown 5 mile run here in Omaha over Memorial Day weekend. I’ve never done a 5 mile race before so it should be interesting. That should be enough of a race “carrot” to keep me running over the next few weekends and since it is my first race at that distance, automatic PR!

3) Find new recipes for my fresh fruits and veggies that will show up once our local CSA starts May 12. I’m really looking forward to picking up those bags of goodies each week! It’s always such a fun challenge to figure out how to use the things we get and I’m looking forward to how excited O gets when we unpack the bag each week.

4) Finish putting the plants into the rest of our garden. I checked this morning and we have several little kale shoots and our blackberry bush has new green leaves. Mother’s Day weekend, we’ll head out to pickup plants for the rest of the garden, including spinach, butternut squash, replanting our herbs, tomatoes, yellow squash and bell pepper. I hope our garden does half as well this  year as last year! We even have our worm compost add on this year, so it should be interesting.

5) Check our tornado supplies and be sure we are as prepared as we can be. My husband and I met in Little Rock and this week’s storms down there reminded me again how unpredictable weather can be. Please do all you can to be prepared and be safe and keep those families in your thoughts. The Red Cross Emergency Kit guide is here.

As far as last month’s goals, I got a great start on the 100 mile challenge and did go get my ring resized (yay!). I haven’t tackled the rock wall yet, but not for lack of trying! It’s been closed the last couple of times I came by during what should have been “open climbing” time. I’ll keep trying!

Last night, it was so cozy to watch the Doctor off the DVR (my go-to when Darrell is doing bedtime and I don’t want to watch anything new that we normally watch together) while drinking my decaf coffee in my new mug. 🙂

I hope we all have a glorious May! I have a good feeling about this month!

  3. Great job with the 100 mile challenge! That is fantastic! These are great goals for May! I can’t wait to hear about the recipes you find for the veggies and fruit you get from your co-op. I am not a fan of tornadoes and it is that time of year. 😦 I spent my early years in earthquake prone So Cal and my mom tells me constantly that earthquakes are so much worse than tornadoes mainly because they are unpredictable but I’d rather have an earthquake any day over a tornado. I should really look at our emergency supplies myself. I can’t wait to hear what you all pick to plant on Mother’s Day, too! I need to do a little gardening this weekend; I have a hydrangea that I got after my dad passed that I want to plant in our backyard and attempt to keep alive. I do not have a green thumb though, but I’ll keep my fingers crossed! Love the Dr. Who mug with the tardis!

    Great goals for May. That is great that your kale is starting to show up! Stay safe up there in Nebraska during tornado season. So scary what can happen in such a short time span. :0(

    • (Knock on wood) I haven’t heard the sirens nearly as often here as I did in Central Texas back when I was in school. I can remember one summer where I was in the bathtub of my apartment once a month due to the tornado sirens!
